(Leviticus 23:24 KJV):
"Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation". 

Meaning & Significance:

  • Trumpets (Shofar): The sound of the trumpet (often a ram's horn) served as a call to worship, a signal for gathering, and a reminder of God YHWH's covenant.

  • Holy Convocation: A sacred assembly where no servile work was done.

  • New Year: It marks the beginning of the religious year for Israel

  • Memorial:

     A remembrance before God, signifying His presence and sovereignty

    .

Purpose:

*To call Israel to worship and acknowledge YHWH's kingship.

* To "arouse the deity's attention" and beseech YHWH for the coming year.

* Connected to other High Holy Days, leading to the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).
